Adopting and expanding ethical principles for generative artificial intelligence from military to healthcare

Summary: The U.S. Department of Defense established ethical principles for AI use in warfare in 2020. Drawing parallels between the military and healthcare, where quick decision-making is crucial, the article discusses the potential impact of generative AI on healthcare. Despite concerns about transparency and bias, ethical principles for generative AI in healthcare are understudied. The article proposes the “GREAT PLEA” ethical principles—Governability, Reliability, Equity, Accountability, Traceability, Privacy, Lawfulness, Empathy, and Autonomy—and introduces a framework to address ethical concerns in healthcare, drawing insights from the military experience.
