Summary: This article discusses the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on learner-instructor interaction in online learning. It highlights several scenarios where AI systems can improve communication, support, and presence in online courses. Students and instructors have varying perceptions of AI’s impact. Students see benefits in increased question asking, personalized learning, and privacy protection, while also expressing concerns about unreliable answers and a loss of autonomy. Instructors appreciate AI’s potential to provide immediate feedback and improve student engagement but are concerned about potential conflicts and a loss of creativity. Both groups raise concerns about surveillance and loss of privacy due to AI’s ability to track students’ behavior. The study uses speed dating with storyboards to explore these perceptions.
